Fedora Core 6, Test 1, is the latest installment from Fedora. It is an operating system based on the Linux Kernel, and Red Hat Linux. This is the sixth version, and is currently in testing stages. This is a preliminary guide to installing Fedora Core 6, and will change with each test release, until the final release. This guide assumes you already have a version of Fedora Core installed on the computer already, and are going to either "Remove All Linux Partitions", or "Upgrade an Existing System". For other instructions, read the Fedora Core 5 Installation Guide and follow that guide.
Download the .iso files from ftp://ftp.rhd.ru/pub/fedora/linux/core/test/5.90/i386/iso/. If you are downloading the DVD iso file, i recommend using KGet or WGet download managers, due to the size (3.1GB). Once downloaded (Approx. 8hours using 1MB Broadband), you need to burn the iso image to a DVD. NOTE: To burn a DVD iso, or any .iso file, you must burn the image, and not the file. Using K3B, this is done like so:
If you do not have k3b, download it using yum like this:
yum install -y k3b
Next, open k3b, and for CD's
Go to Tools>Burn Cd Image, or for a DVD .iso
Go to Tools>Burn DVD ISO Image
A screen appears and you need to select the .iso file you wish to burn. For DVD's it runs an M5 Checksum to verify the DVD. Click Start when you are ready to burn, after inserting a blank DVD-R/DVD-RW disc.
Insert the DVD into the drive and reboot the pc. A text menu appears in red, and you should just hit enter at the command prompt for Graphical Installation. At this propmt, if you have trouble during the install, you can pass instructions, such as "linux rescue", and so on. This is useful for graphics issues, and hardware faults or incompatability.
Once you hit Enter [Return], the media check starts up. At this point you can test the CD or DVD media for errors. You can choose "Continue" or "Skip". If you are sure that the media is fine then you can safely skip this media check, although if you have trouble with the DVD then run the media check on a reboot.
You will now see the Anaconnda installer, the graphical installer for Fedora Core. You will see a warning message, that explains that this is the TEST VERSION, and should be used for testing only, and not day-to-day usage. If you are sure you know what you are doing then click "Install Anyway"
You will be confronted with the standard language choice and keyboard layout options next. You should choose the ones for your language and country for your keyboard layout.
Next you will see the partitioning screen. This is where you can choose many options. The two i use are "Remove All Linux Partitions" and "Upgrade an Existing System". The first choice will remove all versions of Linux you have on your pc, and install to the Linux formatted partition. The later choice will upgrade from an older version of Fedora Core, in this case Fedora Core 5. I highly recommend "Upgrade an Existing System", as the choice for existing Fedora Core 5 users.
Once you are satisfied, the installer then runs final checks, and prepares the Installer. This can take several minutes. Once the checks are complete, if you are using the DVD, go get a cup of coffee, as it takes around 1hour 30mins and 2hours to install, and you wont need to change the discs.
The installer will reboot the conmputer and ready the machine for the first time. After Installation you should configure the machine. See guides on using yum anbd the repo's to add new stuff and configure the machine.
